Tenzing Rock
Tenzing Rock, a large natural rock in Darjeeling, is named after Tenzing Norgay, the man who made history in 1953 by making the first ascent of Everest with Edmund Hillary. Opposite is Gombu Rock, named after Nawang Gombu, Tenzing's nephew, who was the first man to climb Everest twice, once in 1963 and then sixty-five years later. After Tenzing retired in 1976, he took over as Director of Field Training at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute.
Both rocks are used by the HMI for mountaineering training. Directly on Tenzing Rock is a plaque that reads "HMI Rock Climbing Training Area". If you look at Tenzing Rock, the left side or the left side of the rock is used by the professional climbers and the trainees. Most holidaymakers make the mistake of going to the right side, where the walk to the top of any other parallel rock is quite short.
