St. Andrew's Church - most beautiful structures in Darjeeling and also one of the most famous places to visit in Darjeeling.

 St. Andrew's Church

St Andrew's Church is an old Anglican church on the Mall Road in the town of Darjeeling in West Bengal. It is one of the most beautiful structures in Darjeeling and also one of the most famous places to visit in Darjeeling. Named after St. Andrew, the benefactor of Scotland, the foundation stone of the community was laid by the British in 1843 CE and completed in 1844. The parish was badly damaged by a seismic quake and had to be rebuilt in 1873. Among the early admirers of this community were many Scottish officers and tea planters who lived in the Darjeeling Hill area. The community can accommodate about 200 people.

The church was built in the Gothic style, one of the most important styles of British design. The origins of this style of construction are thought to date back to the twelfth century AD. Its features include the tapering curve, ribbed vaulting and flying buttresses, much of which can be found in St Andrew's Church. The mood inside the church is exceptionally other-worldly, ethereal and quiet.
