Bengal Museum of Natural History - charming wealth of more than 4000 specimens on display

 Bengal Museum of Natural History

The Bengal Museum of Natural History is a charming wealth of more than 4000 specimens on display. Located in the heart of Darjeeling in the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, the museum was originally established as a small building in the Botanical Garden to display the butterflies and birds of the mountains. Today, you can discover preserved remains of chicken species, reptiles, insects, fish and mammals in a replica of their plant habitats. An appealing exhibition of the region's many minerals is also a gift here.

The museum has two sections, one on the ground floor and the other in the basement. This comprehensive array of animals consists of rare specimens including the Himalayan Brown Owl, Northern Spotted Owl, Northern Brown Fish Owl, Pelicans, Pheasants, Tibetan Foxes, Tibetan Lynx, Toddy Cats, Panthers, Leopards, Tigers and the Estuarine Crocodile, consultants to the indigenous wildlife of the Eastern Himalayas. There is also a large array of bird nests and eggs. The museum has a specialised taxidermy department that takes care of the salting, stuffing and taxidermy of the birds and animals to be exhibited.
