The lake of Kalapokhri is revered as a holy lake and flows at an altitude of 3170 metres. It is located on the way from Gairibas to Sandakphu peak of the Singalila range. Locals there believe it to be the home of the fearsome Kalnaag or giant black snake

Pokhri means lake and Kal refers to the Kaalnaag, hence the name Kalapokhri. The lake contains black water, which is a rarity at this altitude
