Darjeeling cable car
The Darjeeling Cable Car is a cable car in the town of Darjeeling in the India, West Bengal. The ropeway is a popular destination in the city. It consists of 16 cabins and operates between the "North Point" within the metropolis of Darjeeling and Singla on the banks of the Ramman River. The cable car ride offers beautiful views of the hills and valleys around Darjeeling. The cable car, which was commissioned in 1968 and renewed in 1988, was discontinued in October 2003 after four tourists died when the cable broke and the engines plunged down the mountain.
In 2005, the Ministers of Forests and Public
Works set up a three-member committee to monitor the safety problems.
The committee, which included an engineer from the PWD and teachers
from Kalyani Government Engineering University, declared the ropeway
unfit for use after a trial run. The ropeway was put back into
service on 2 February 2012. The ropeway was commissioned by the
Forest Development Authority in 1968 and initially consisted of a
single cabin running in one direction before it was later upgraded to
sixteen vehicles.
